Healthy
Soil Though daylilies are tough plants, we nurture
our soil to provide you with the most vigorous plants possible. Large, healthy
plants are the direct result of good soil. Chemical fertilizers are easy to apply
and cost less in the short term, but they make the soil "dead" over time. We add
our own compost which brings the soil to life. Healthy soil is filled with microorganisms,
earthworms and humus. The ocean provides us with seaweed, crab shell meal, greensand,
and fish fertilizer. We also use hay, horse manure and wood chips which we get
from our neighbors on the island. | The
Birds and the Bees The fields here are alive, not just
with beautiful flowers, but with birds, bees, and beneficial insects. We encourage
diversity and a healthy ecosystem. Using chemicals would quickly upset the balance,
leaving more problems. We have free roaming Guinea Hens wandering the daylily
rows. They eat any slugs, snails, cutworms and Japanese beetles to protect the
daylilies.

The Bug Field We have planted a large area with flowering plants that
attract beneficial insects. These include tansy, daisies, dill, chamomile, catmint,
and yarrow. We can see the ladybugs, lacewings, and pirate bugs at work in our
fields, protecting the daylilies. |
Giving
Back to the Earth We believe everyone can make
a difference in the world with the choices they make in their own lives. For us,
that means taking care of the whole earth, not just our plot of land. Our boxes
and packing material are re-used, recyclable and biodegradable. We don't use plastic
labels or pots, or heat a greenhouse. We've recently added solar panels to produce
electricity for the farm and house. We aim to educate, perhaps even inspire, with
this family farm. | |
